Rabbi at Congregation Ahavas Sholom Job Opening Description
Duties:
Develop personal relationships with congregants/potential members to encourage people to remain members of our synagogue and help recruit new members. Develop youth programs to attract and keep families at synagogue. Organize and work with a Youth Committee. Help supervise a youth director. Interface with children, teenagers, and college-age students. Be a motivational speaker, who can encourage people to enhance their Jewish life, and to help the synagogue. Deliver sermons every Sabbath and on the Jewish holidays. Be a leader in Fundraising. Life-cycle events: Attend members’ weddings; Bar/Bat Mitzvahs; Brit Milah (circumcision) celebrations, etc. Officiate at: weddings, funerals, shiva (Mourning for a deceased loved one) houses. Shaliach Tzibbur (leader of prayer) responsibilities: Join rotating congregational volunteers; Daily, Shacharit (morning), Mincha (afternoon) or Maariv (evening) services; Shabbat;. Organize, and participate in Talmud or other type of Shiurim (Jewish classes): Shabbat afternoon class, deliver sermon at Shalosh Seudos (Saturday late afternoon meal); Weekdays talk between Mincha (afternoon) and Maariv (evening)services; Develop curriculum for Sunday and weekday classes, weekly women’s class, Bet Midrash (small chapel) learning program and Daf Yomi (daily Talmud study). Synagogue Newsletter: Write and edit article(s). Visit congregants in area hospitals. Counseling (individual, personal, family, marital, bereavement). Visibility in general Jewish community: Columbus Torah Academy, Jewish Columbus; Board of Rabbis; Va’ad Rabbanim (City wide Rabbinic council). Rav Hamachshir (kosher food) responsibilities: Synagogue kitchens for synagogue functions; Synagogue kitchens for private and community functions; Local facilities, work with the kosher food certifying agency (bakery; future butcher; pizza store; deli).
Requirements: Must have Orthodox Rabbinic ordination (semicha) and 5 years of pulpit experience as a Senior Rabbi at an Orthodox Synagogue, including:
- Educational programming,
- cantor/services leader,
- kosher food supervision (mashgiach),
- pastoral care,
- family counseling,
- community events programming.
- Ability to serve as Rabbinic authority on community questions of Jewish law and conflict
- Liaising with the greater secular community
