March - April 2005 ~ Adar II 5765    Rabbi's Message:

     Following Succos and the Yom Tov season, the prospect of winter is not very exciting. That sense of deflation is only exacerbated when the winter is endowed with an extra lunar month for good measure.
     We are now at the point that we can see the spring light at the end of the long winter tunnel. The month of Adar Sheni and Purim is upon us, and that has to mean that Pesach and Chodesh Ha'Aviv (the month of spring) is not far behind.
     During those early weeks of autumn following Yom Tov, I mentioned in a sermon (Parshas Lech-Lecha), the traditional Jewish outlook towards the long winter. Winter is meant to serve as a time for accomplishment and productivity. While the physical world enters a quiet state of dormancy and slumber, the spiritual realm ignites with the fervor of Torah study. The Rambam writes that one's main source of wisdom is accrued through the study of Torah during the long and lonely nights.
     I write this message as I have just returned from the Siyum Ha'Shas at Madison Square Garden. Every seven and a half years Jews from all walks of life assemble en masse to celebrate the most important aspect of our lives as G-d's chosen people - the study of His Torah. It is beyond the scope of this message to detail the highlights of the event. However, suffice it to say that as I was there on the floor of the Garden amidst the celebrants, a tremendous sense of pride overcame me.
     I thought back to our accomplishments this past winter here at Ahavas Sholom. We as a collective body took on an ambitious regimen of Torah study. Monday evenings saw the continuation of our weekly travel through Tractate Ta'anis, while Tuesday evenings were enriched with Halchic discussions for women. Thursday mornings were devoted to the soothing words of the Prophets and Shabbos afternoons were spent studying in a traditional Beis Medresh style.
     On the topic of siyum (completion of study), we were able to finish the eighth chapter of Tractate Yoma and the first chapter of Ta'anis. Our Thursday morning class in Melachim was also blessed to see its completion.
     But the crowning jewel of this past winter has to be the reinstitution of the Daf Ha'Yomi in our Shul and community. The group was fortunate to study the entire Tractates of Kerisos, Me'ilah, Tamid, Middos and Niddah. I personally owe my thanks to those who have attended and shared the yoke of preparing and delivering the shiurim. But a special debt of gratitude must be given to Dr. Warren Sobol who persevered to ensure that his dream of having a Daf Ha'Yomi in Columbus would become a reality.
     Torah study and its observance is the lifeblood of the Jewish People. Thanks to all those who have been learning and participating, there is much more life at Ahavas Sholom.
     May Hashem grant us the strength to continue in our efforts.

We have been working hard to upgrade the library and acquire books of general interest. Unfortunately, many books have not been signed out and are missing from our shelves. These include books about or by Rav Shach, Rav Freifeld, Rabbi Frand, and Rabbi Forst, and books about Hallel and the 39 Melochos, among others. Please check your shelves for any books that you did not sign out and return them immediately to the library. If the missing books are not returned we may be forced to lock up the library , or have a non -circulation policy, decisions we would like to avoid.
