Message from Yehudit Grunsfeld, Shlicha of Bnei Akiva:
To the dear congregation of Ahavas Sholom: I arrived here about 3
and a half months ago, feeling jet lagged and overwhelmed, and by what you may
call a culture shock. I have met so many wonderful people, who care not only for
the success of this new, very different and exciting program, but also care a
lot for the welfare of Ilana and me. My coming here to Columbus was to, first
of all bring the spirit of our wonderful land - Eretz Yisrael , but I also had
a great interest in getting to know my fellow brothers and sisters overseas...
It's amazing just how much I have learned and experienced in such little time!
I think it's a great opportunity for all of us!!! So, now that I have settled
in for a short while, I would like to present some upcoming youth activities.
But first, I would like to thank all the many people who have and are always happy
to help me out -- nothing is ever too hard for them - Thank you!!! Shabbat
youth groups: As you all know, we have
started youth groups during Shabbat services for kids in grades 1-6. This group
has recently been split into 3 groups: 1st & 2nd grade - led by Shayna
Cohen 3rd & 4th grade - led by Tali Levi (welcome Tali and good luck) 5th
& 6th grade - led by me Groups begin at: 10:30am
- starting with Parashat Shavua for all 3 groups together. 10:45-11:15am -
groups split up according to age with individual group activity 11:15-11:35am
- Davening (1st & 2nd led by Shayna and 3rd-6th led by Ari Braun) 11:35am
- Kids Kiddush- supervised by Ari and myself. New:
fun and creative learning activities for girls on Sundays - monthly topic &
Bat Mitzvah program.
The first program was held on Sunday, December
11, the 10th of Kislev. Monthly topic from 10:00-11:00am: This
program is for the 3rd and 4th grade girls. In this program we are going to deal
with different topics on a monthly basis. Topics such as: Eretz Yisrael, Chesed,
Midot and so on. Any parent who would like to share an idea for another topic
is more than welcome - just be in touch with me! Bat Mitzvah program
from 11:00am-12:00pm:
This program is for 5th and 6th grade girls.
We are going to be dealing with different topics such as: Chala Hafrashat chala,
baking... Candle lighting, women in the Tanach and different qualities that can
be learned from them and so on. I'm inviting any parent who would like to take
part in different section of this program to be in contact with me.
Wednesday night teen discussion:
The first session began Wednesday,
the 6th of Kislev, 12/07/05 at 6:30 PM, in the Shul! The discussions will be taking
place with Rabbi Rosenberg and myself on a weekly rotation. The idea is to develop
a good and strong relationship between the teens and the Rabbi and the shlicha
and to bring to discussion different topics in a safe and healthy environment.
We will be dealing with topics and issues which will be brought up either by the
Rabbi and myself or by the teens. Oneg Shabbat: We
plan to start a routine of Onegei Shabbat on Friday nights for the teens. Every
Shabbat, the Oneg Shabbat will be hosted by different families of the teens, in
which the hosts can decide on the program for that Oneg Shabbat. The host families
for the upcoming Ongei Shabbat are: the Rabbi Rosenberg family, Braun family,
Adler family, Goldish family, Nutis family and myself. Any family who would like
to host an Oneg Shabbat is more than welcome - please be in touch with me. P.S.
- This is a good time to celebrate birthdays, so please let me know. Activities
for 1st & 2nd grades: This past month we had a Cheshvan and winter activity
with the younger kids. This activity took place in the Shul and included an art
activity and discussion about the Israeli water crisis - corresponding to the
bracha we say in the winter time: Mashiv haruach u'morid ha'geshem . We plan on
having an activity once a month on the same basis as the last one. I guess
this is about it... I hope that with everyone's cooperation these new programs
will be able to be successful! Yours, Yehudit Grunsfeld Shlicha of
