Rabbi's Message:
The season of Purim is upon us, and (we hope!) a warmer season outdoors as well. As we turn our thoughts to the heroes of Megillas Esther, we find Mordechai receiving what seems to be an illustrious honor from Achashveirosh. Sitting at the helm of the biggest superpower of the civilized world at the time, Achashveirosh is the most powerful figure alive. At the end of the Megillah, Mordechai is given royal garments and promoted to an even higher rank in the echelons of this dynasty. Yet when the prophet Habakuk (1:4) bemoans a righteous person being crowned by the wicked, the Yalkut explains that this refers to Mordechai receiving deference from Achashveirosh! Now that Haman and his followers had been hung, the enemies were vanquished, and a new sense of respite for our nation prevailed, what exactly was the travesty in Mordechai's being honored by Achashveirosh?!
It seems that the respect due a pure Neshama, or soul, is far beyond what a mortal is able to bestow in the material sense. Being that its source is pure and spiritual, there is nothing physical in this world that can do justice to the spirituality for which it sincerely pines. For Mordechai to receive grandeur from someone whose fame stemmed from materialism reflected a disgrace in the true sense of the term, considering the wickedness of the donor.
While we daven for the good graces of leaders around the world, we must keep in mind that nothing short of direct recognition and favor from Hashem will ever satisfy our Neshamos. We can tap into these feelings when taking advantage of the programs and shiurim that round out the repertoire of our Kehilla, and all the more so when we take a participatory role in facilitating their success. True honor lies within Torah and Mitzvos, as underscored in Pirkei Avos, so let's help ourselves!
