Shul Bulletin - December 2009 - February 2010

Kislev - Adar 5770

Rabbi's Message:

With the approach of Chanukah and the upcoming dedication of our new administrative wing, there is much excitement in the air at Ahavas Sholom. As I feel privileged to be a part of such an exhilarating chapter of our shul's rich history, the nexus to be drawn to Chanukah begs our attention.

The lights of the Chanukiah are to be placed specifically in the most visible part of our homes, so that outside passersby will readily perceive our advertisement of the miracle done for our people thousands of years ago. When we think about the unparalleled publicity of the Chanukah candles, it makes us wonder what it is about this Mitzvah that requires such attention far beyond that of most any other Mitzvah?

The Medrash connects this aspect of the Mitzvah to Reuven's saving of his brother Yosef from the pit into which his brothers threw him, demonstrating that the private act done by Reuven merited a very public display of a Mitzvah for many generations to come. It seems that though Reuven did not need the widespread credit for his act, the Torah makes it clear to all that his action was quite commendable, and therefore deserving of much attention.

On a related note, the Rashba, Rabbi Shlomo ben Aderet, a medieval Halachist of the 1300's, writes in his responsa (Vol. 1, ch. 581) about a question regarding a person who wanted their name upon a part of a shul that they had paid to dedicate. Others of the congregation wanted to prevent the donor from doing so, but the Rashba decided that the performer of the Mitzvah should be publicized, based upon the fact that the Torah tells us about Reuven's saving Yosef from the pit.

The generosity of many of our members and friends in dedicating their means and selves to making our shul a beautiful place of Torah and Tefillah is a testimony to their devotion to our Kehilla. The attention given to those who have given is not only valid, but important in strengthening the resolve of others to join in the crucial work of our shul.

Just as we are proud of the miracles brought upon us from Hashem in days gone by, we are grateful for the point that Hashem has helped us reach with our shul. May Chanukah bring with it the blessings of success in all areas of Congregation Ahavas Sholom, and continued growth together in good health.

Rabbi Chaim Yosef Ackerman

Israel Action Committee:

Members of the shul and others in the community were able to learn about the origins of Zionism and controversies in the early history of Zionism via two well attended lectures by our member, Professor Matt Goldish of the Melton Center at the Ohio State University. These lectures were the first events of the recently formed Israel Action Committee. The first lecture took place in August and featured a display of Israeli Judaica from the Breslov Center, delicious Israeli food (Chani Capland catering) and Dr. Goldish's lecture. This lecture explored the religious roots of early Zionism, specifically - what led religious Jews from Europe to settle in the "Yishuv" of then Ottoman Palestine during the early 1800s? The second lecture took place at the home of Patrick Wiesel and Diane Chang --with many thanks to them for opening their home for this event. This lecture focused on Zionist and Anti-Zionist Rabbis of the 19th Century, with an in depth discussion of responses to Zionism among leading rabbis in both Eastern Europe and Germany during the late 1800s. This event also featured a wine and cheese reception after Dr. Goldish's talk. Both events were very well attended both by shul members and others within the Columbus Jewish Community and gave the audience an opportunity to socialize as well as to learn and ponder our own collective history. We are very proud to have Dr. Goldish as a member of our shul; his perspective and knowledge as a historian offers much for all of us to think about in terms of the past and how it relates to the present. The Israeli Action Committee is appreciative of his time and attention to delivering interesting and meaningful sessions for all of us.

The Israel Action Committee will plan other events for this year (2009-10). If you are interested in becoming involved, we would welcome your help. Please contact Judy Groner at jgroner@chi.osu.edu if you wish to join the committee!

Sisterhood News:

The Ahavas Sholom Sisterhood held its opening meeting on Sunday, October 25th with a brunch and an unusual craft opportunity for the membership. The well attended meeting began with a D'var Torah from Rabbi Ackerman. Next, Lana Covel, the immediate past Sisterhood president, was honored for all of her hard work and dedication to the Shul. The brunch itself was a creative and delicious 'baked potato bar' along with a tasty vegetable soup and salad. Thank you so much to Ellen Romanoff for a delicious soup and also a special thank you to Tova Hauser and Karan Tanenbaum who did all the shopping and preparations for the brunch. But the most unique part of the event was the lesson in decorative beading which was used to embellish serving utensils. For a nominal fee, Gahanna Bead Studio provided a detailed lesson, tools and a variety of decorative beads to be used to decorate serving utensils (provided by Tova Hauser). The Sisterhood members were able to make beautifully ornamented serving utensils in a relatively short period of time. Most had never done anything like this before and had a great time working with the tools and materials. We'd like to thank those members who then donated what they had made to the Sisterhood to be used at future Ahavas Sholom events. These lovely serving pieces will certainly enhance the Shabbos tables at our Shul events.

We'd like to welcome Shelley Levey as the new Sisterhood president as well as the Social Committee which will now be a subcommittee of the Sisterhood. Shelley welcomes all women who would like to become involved in the Sisterhood as well as any ideas about possible events for the coming year. Some of the events we'll be working on in the coming months, and will need help with, are a Scholar-in-Residence Shabbos with Rabbi Berel Wein and of course our annual Cholent Cookoff in February. Please contact Shelley at jacknshelley@sbcglobal.net if you'd like to help out with either of these events or with future events.

Introducing Ahavas Sholom's Couples and Families with Young Children's Committee:

This committee, chaired by Dina Vinar-Cieplinski, is looking to enhance the experience of this young and vitally important part of our shul. The purpose of this group is to connect with others to share in each other's joys, challenges and each milestone in a warm, Torah atmosphere.

Here are some of the programs you can expect to see in the next three months:

Kids, bring your parents!
Mommy and Me!, run by Elana Gisser, to start in January in our beautiful new facility. (Please see below for press release to OJC)

Afternoon with COSI-Come experience Hashem's wondrous world through science. Science with Torah by Rabbi Ackerman

Motzei Shabbos ice skating/ boys and Dads hockey - a night at the rink! All children and parents welcome to skate till 9pm. Then boys 7 and up with their fathers stay for a game of hockey. Helmets and pads required

Adults Only
Game night - join us for a night of round robin games in the homes of our peers. Ordinary games come alive with a Jewish twist

Newlyweds game - see how well you know your partner, regardless of length of marriage!

Pizza, Bowling, and Divrei torah - come in out of the cold and join other couples to some hot drinks and pizza, warm atmosphere with relevant Divrei Torah pertaining to our lives, and a chance to hone your bowling skills!

We are looking for volunteers to serve on subcommittees to help us make this a smashing success and a catchy name for our group. Please contact Dina Vinar-Cieplinski at Brachajoy@aol.com to volunteer, submit a name for the group, feedback and programming suggestions.

Press Release as printed in the OJC:
"Laughing, Loving, Learning Together," Mommy and Me is coming to Congregation Ahavas Sholom. Mommy and Me gives opportunities for both moms and children to make new friends. Children aged 2 1/2 and under and their parents will meet once a week in one of Ahavas Sholom's new classrooms. Elana Gisser will lead the program and is looking forward to starting the program in January. "There is a need for this type of programming. There are a group of moms who stay home with their young children. Once a week the children can interact with other children and the moms can have some adult conversation. I am excited to be a part of this", says Gisser. Rabbi Chaim Yosef Ackerman believes that "this is an exciting time for our congregation, and this type of programming provides a wonderful venue for our families to spend some time together in our shul."

Also, a new committee at Ahavas Sholom has been formed to cater to young couples and families with young children. The feeling is that it is important for young couples and parents who have young children within the same age group to get together. Such couples generally are going through similar situations, milestones and challenges, and have much to share with one another with regard to advice and solutions. Periodic outings of this group will be helpful to all and will be unifying for our community.

Family day activities will be planned too. Like Mommy and Me, it will be an opportunity for children and parents to have fun. Ahavas Sholom is looking to engage members as well as non-members. Dina Vinar-Cieplinski, who was asked to head this committee says, "It's about building a community and anyone who knows me, knows that is what I am all about".
