Shul Bulletin - December 2008 - February 2009

Kislev - Adar 5769

December 2008 - February 2009

Kislev - Adar 5769

From the Social Committee:

The Simchas Beis Hashoeva was our kick off event. It had something for everyone - arts and crafts for the kids, outdoor games led by Dotan Herszage, a split the pot raffle and jelly bean count contest. Everyone enjoyed food, drinks, music and each other's company. Congratulations to Phil & Julie Weinerman, who won the split the pot raffle, and who donated their share of the money back to the Social Committee for future events.

A very big thank you to the teens who decorated the social hall, helped oversee the art activities and ran the cotton candy machine. Kudos to everyone who helped with the clean up after the event. The janitor arrived at the end of the day prepared to clean up a huge mess, but instead found a very orderly social hall. Thank you!

Rabbi Paysach Krohn visited our shul in November for a Scholar-in-Residence Shabbos and lived up to his reputation of being a master maggid. His stories were uplifting and enlightening. The Friday Shabbos night dinner was well attended with 160 people. The stories, friends and families that gathered, coupled with the beautiful set up, delicious food, and special activities for the children made for an unforgettable evening. Thank you to Eran Rosenberg for leading the kindergarten through fifth grade in an activity and to the pre- teens for looking after our youngest children. The support of the many who helped in the kitchen and the clean up was very much appreciated as well. A special thank you to all those people who stepped up and volunteered to shop, cook, serve and clean up. This kind of achdus is what makes for successful events. Thank you all!

Rabbi Hirsh M. Chinn, a former Ahavas Sholom rabbi, visited with the congregation at the end of November. An Oneg Shabbos at the home of Shelley and Jack Levey brought together more than 45 congregants that Friday evening. Shabbos morning we all enjoyed Rabbi Chinn's inspiring drasha from the bima.

More activities are being planned for our congregation. The annual cholent cook-off is sure to be a hit for its fifth year running. We already have five teams signed up so mark your calendars for January 10th (see the attached flier) and make sure to RSVP; seats fill up fast.

This year as Tu B'Shevat approaches, we will honor the Rabbaim of our shul for all the help they constantly provide, and also welcome our new members at a lunch on February 7th. This lunch is subsidized by a generous donor - we are looking forward to a great turnout. Additional information to follow.

February, the JCC and Ahavas Sholom will again partner to provide shul members with JCC benefits. Non JCC-members can enjoy the benefits of membership and regular members can upgrade their membership to be a Health Club member for the month at no charge. Another exciting event being planned is a Murder Mystery Evening at the JCC…stay tuned for more information.

Social committee members include Judy Groner, Laura Nutis, Ellen Romanoff, Cathy Schwartz, Lea Schottenstein, and Marlene Sobol and chairpersons Shelley Levey and Dina Vinar-Cieplinski. The committee feels that one of the most important things it can offer the shul during this year of transition is programming that will keep the congregation connected.
