Rabbi's Message:

"During a time of moral depravity..."

The Book of Rus, which we read on Shavuos, begins by describing the generation as being one in which, "The Judges judged," which many commentaries agree refers to people not listening to the leadership. Rather, they explain, each person felt they needed no other authority, and that they could make their own moral decisions. Imagine- leadership decides that certain behavior does not behoove one with Torah standards, and the common Jew feels they know better. Halacha addresses what constitutes an appropriate mode of dress, and people decide that they feel it is antiquated. The Torah asks that we speak in a manner becoming one with a sense of morality and higher standard, and we choose to place it on a lower priority than gaining the superficial approval of peers and colleagues.

I hope this setting does not ring familiar to us, but I am afraid its prevalence in our time challenges many around us. "If Torah leaders would take a stand on this issue, then I would have what to look up to." This does not constitute a valid excuse for not having a regard for our Torah leadership, and when Pirkei Avos exhorts us to adopt a Rav for yourself, it does not qualify the statement by saying, 'unless you feel you are not in need of such guidance.' Chazal tell us that every generation is given the leadership appropriate and commensurate to its stature and ability, and ours is no exception.

There is another, subtle yet important lesson contained in the time-period of the book of Rus. From very humble beginnings, Rus took brave steps that led to the establishment of the Davidic dynasty, which we learn will lead to our Moshiach. We have it in our ability to produce results far beyond our natural expectations, if and when we believe that Hashem will help us do so. Let us not become too humble in thinking that we cannot furnish astounding feats, for Rus showed us that every person can do so.

We have recently enjoyed Shabbos HaGadol meals in shul, the enlightening words of Rabbi Shalom Hammer, and brought our first annual raffle campaign to an impressive culmination. Our Centennial Dinner celebration plans are well underway, and there is a role for everyone to play. As well, all should have received information about our Moveathon by now, which promises to be fun for the whole family while raising much-needed funds for our shul. Get involved, and we will be pleasantly surprised by the results!
