"Publicize it - Quietly!"

The Halacha states the Chanukah candles should be displayed prominently, and during the time that passersby will most readily notice their presence. As a nation whose pride runs deep but whose sleeve does not blatantly wear it at all times, this command deserves our attention. With the comparison to Purim as being the other Rabbinic Holiday of the year, we discuss why there is Hallel, no Mussaf, and numerous other items unique to this 'most wonderful time of the year.' Yet the subtlety of all of our other events stands in stark contrast to the imperative that our Chanukios be in the window, or outside at the doorpost for all to see. What is this all about?

Rav Baruch HaLevy Epstein in his commentary on the Torah explains an unusual allusion in the Midrash, where Reuvein's actions are compared to the Menorah of future generations commemorating Chanukah. Rav Epstein z'l, points out that Reuvein saved Yosef, his brother from the pit in a clandestine fashion, one that required the Torah to mention it for future generations to be aware. This, he says, is much like the Chanukah miracle in that a select few in the Bais HaMikdosh knew of the miracle at the time, and had to tell others for it to become public. This answers our dilemma.

Purim serves as the quintessential example of our people being quite publicly at risk for decimation, and Hashem, quietly as it was, bringing our public salvation. Chanuka, on the other hand, could have become lost had the few not made sure that the many would be aware. We often bear witness to clear and unequivocal miracles to which the world around us turns a blind eye. We usually keep these miracles to ourselves, quietly celebrating all of the Brachos that Hashem continues to bestow upon us. Chanukah is the exception to that rule; this is the time of year to publicize - in our unique and respectful way - the fact that we know His loving hand is involved in our every move, and will always be there for us.
