Rabbi's Message:

"Pardon your clemency"

The season of achieving forgiveness is upon us, and with that comes the season of granting forgiveness to others. In order to gain insight into how forgiveness works, we look to one of the most infamous sins of our ancestors, that of the Spies. Here was a situation in which we not only fell short of Hashem's expectation that we rely upon His guarantee, but we fell prey to the doubts of others, furnishing the most ominous day in our history, Tisha B'Av.

In the aftermath of this calamity, Moshe intercedes on our behalf, regaining the favor of Hashem and avoiding potential destruction of the Jewish people. His methodology is so beneficial that we employ its memory each time we recite the Selichos, and yet it should strike us as odd.

Moshe Rabbeinu asks that Hashem, "(forgive us...) in the manner that He has borne us from the Exodus from Egypt until this point..." At the very strongest point of Hashem's wrath, Moshe invokes the memory of past misgivings of our people, and how Hashem has been compassionate in His dealings with us up until this point. Why would Moshe want Hashem to think about the stains of our past, and how He has had to exercise clemency with us repeatedly?! Would any self-respecting counsel present an argument for leniency based upon the misdeeds of their client, and how the judge has been down this path before? Yet Moshe Rabbeinu does so, and it effectively arouses the mercy of Hashem!

In order to understand how this can work, we must examine the motives of the judge, and how here the example of the Supreme Judge demonstrates the proper approach. Past misgivings serve to the detriment of the defendant, yet when a judge sincerely seeks to remedy the situation, the compassion they have shown for the person in the past re-ignites their feelings of concern for the success of the subject.

We sometimes find ourselves giving up on the mistakes of others, resigning to their ineptitude to improve. Yet, deep down, if we care for this person, we are able to draw upon our concern for them, and extend them this favor once again. No matter how far we have drifted from another or from Hashem, we wish for their continued consideration of our plight.

We are taught by the Rabbis that Hashem treats us in the same manner that we treat each other. While the patience we must exercise with others may push our tolerance to new limits, it serves us to be, 'selfless for selfish reasons.'

Menucha, my family and I wish each and every one of you a Kesiva VaChasima Tovah, filled with good health, prosperity and Nachas!

Rabbi Chaim Yosef Ackerman

Thank you...Shelley Levey

SEED Program and COSI on Wheels / BBQ:

Attended by almost 130 people, Ahavas Sholom's COSI on Wheels and BBQ event was a resounding success for the community. The evening was put together as a wrap-up of the SEED program that ran for a week and a half in July. After a number of years' hiatus, the SEED program returned to Ahavas Sholom, with a rabbi, his wife and 4 students from the Chofetz Chaim Yeshiva in Miami, Florida.

The send-off program enabled parents and children alike to have fun, eat and learn a little about science and its connection with Judaism. "It was a wonderful closing for a most successful SEED program! It was truly enjoyable for children and adults alike," said Rabbi Ackerman.

Thank you to the following for helping to make this event successful: Rabbi Hauser, Josh Cohen, Todd Delman, Dotan Herszage, Marvin Vinar, Aviva Marlin, Cathy Schwartz, Deena Tanenbaum, Joel Wolff, Barbara Cooper, Rebecca Lefkovitz and to the organizers, Menucha Ackerman, Elana Gisser, Lina Margolin and Dina Vinar-Cieplinski. Also, a special thank you to our anonymous sponsor for bringing COSI on Wheels to Ahavas Sholom.
