President's Message:
I am grateful to the members of the Shul and Hakadosh Baruch Hu to allow me to
serve Congregation Ahavas Sholom as President. My father served as President
for many years and I am happy to follow in that tradition. We have been members
of Ahavas Sholom for decades and I have seen firsthand the wonderful
individuals and families so committed to learning, tefillah and community. Our
level of avodah, torah study, and chesed is unsurpassed in Columbus.
We have had some challenges, but are seeing great progress as we move ahead. We
have done due-diligence on the building project and have estimates and plans.
We should be able to proceed, G-d willing, in the near future with
groundbreaking and a completed project before next Tishrei. I would like to see
a special event to commemorate the historic groundbreaking, so look for details
and hard-hats to follow.
The land and house adjacent to the Shul may also become available, yet again,
for future use and give us opportunities for housing our next rabbi and flex
space during the build-out.
I would like to see tangible progress on the building effort before we again
start the difficult process of a Rabbi search. Obviously, if we have an
opportunity to meet with exceptional candidates prior to that time, we should
take advantage. Please let me or a board member know if you hear of outstanding
individuals who may fit in with the Ahavas Sholom family. A formal search will
follow a careful review of what went right and what went wrong with the last
process. I know we will be successful in the endeavor of finding a suitable
spiritual leader committed to Ahavas Sholom and the Columbus Jewish
community.
We will have guest ba'alei tefillah and rabbis over the Holidays in the
meantime, and during the year look for Rabbis- and scholars-in-residence.
Programming for both youth and adults will be strengthened and improved.
I look forward to working with the congregation and Board of Directors and hope
to lead Ahavas Sholom in a positive and meaningful direction in the coming
years.
Shana Tova,
David Portman, MD President
Sisterhood News:
Sisterhood is starting a new project for the holidays. This time of year it is
nice to keep in touch with friends and family near and far. Since everyone is
so busy, Sisterhood has decided to offer some assistance. Starting this year,
Ahavas Sholom Sisterhood is offering holiday greeting cards. The cards have
pictures taken in the Shul. Some have holiday wishes, and some are blank. They
can be purchased in packs of 10 for $10.00 or 2 packs for $18.00. Flyers will
be sent out with more information, or you can contact Cathy Schwartz at
231-6083.
Another way that Sisterhood will be helping you for the holidays is by offering
gift packages of honey and wine. These are great as a thank-you gift for others
or even for your own family. Information will be sent out, or you can contact
Cathy Schwartz.
Our annual Chanukah dinner will be on December 19, the Friday night before
Chanukah. It should be a fun evening for all.
Our enhanced Kiddush program is still going strong. This is a good way to
remember a loved one or an event like an anniversary or birthday. For more
information, contact Lana Covel at 235-9920.
Thanks to everyone who has taken the time to make all of these events
happen.
To become a member of Sisterhood, contact Barbara Vinar at 231-0478.
Respectfully,
Ahavas Sholom Sisterhood
